The second and final phase of the tunnel renovation on the Tauernautobahn (A10) between Golling and Werfen in Salzburg is set to begin on September 10, 2024. This phase will see significant traffic disruptions, with only one lane available in each direction, leading to expected traffic jams.
The Austrian highway operator, Asfinag, has introduced a speed reduction strategy to improve traffic flow, with speed limits set at 100 km/h and 80 km/h on busy days.
The renovation, costing 265 million euros, aims to update the Ofenauer and Hieflertunnels and the Werfen tunnel chain with new safety and operational technology.
Commuters are encouraged to use public transport, which will be prioritized to bypass traffic congestion.
The project is expected to be completed by June 2025.
