The construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel in Austria has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the first tunnel bore.
This achievement connects Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag underground, marking a major step forward in the 27.3-kilometer project.
The tunnel, which began construction in 2014, has faced numerous challenges, particularly due to complex geological conditions.
Despite these hurdles, the first bore is now complete, and work on the second bore is expected to finish by early 2025. The tunnel aims to reduce travel time between Vienna and Graz by 50 minutes, with full operation slated for December 2029. This project, costing approximately 3.9 billion euros, is set to enhance rail connectivity in Europe significantly.
