Vienna's U2 Subway Extension Delayed to 2030

Published: 2024-08-07

The extension of Vienna's U2 subway line to Matzleinsdorfer Platz has been delayed until 2030, two years later than planned, due to geological challenges.

The project, which is part of a larger initiative to improve public transport, is now expected to cost an additional 300 million euros, bringing the total estimated cost to around 2 billion euros.

Issues such as unexpected earth movements and water ingress have complicated construction efforts.

Meanwhile, the reopening of the U2 line between Karlsplatz and Schottentor has also been postponed to autumn 2024. Despite these setbacks, the first phase of the U5 line is still on track to be completed by 2026. The delays and rising costs have raised concerns about the future of subway expansions in Vienna, with officials hinting that the U5 may be the last new subway line due to environmental considerations.
