Austria's Westbahn railway line, severely impacted by recent floods, is set to partially reopen, offering relief to commuters and freight services.
The catastrophic weather, exacerbated by climate change, had led to significant disruptions, with only a fraction of the usual 550 daily trains operating.
From October 10, both ÖBB and Westbahn will increase their services, reducing travel delays between Vienna and St.
Pölten.
However, full restoration of the new Westbahn line is expected by December 15, with further closures planned in 2025 for infrastructure upgrades.
The ÖBB has committed to adapting future infrastructure to withstand more extreme weather events, acknowledging past planning oversights.
Meanwhile, a shuttle service between Tullnerfeld and Vienna West will commence on November 4, aiding daily commuters.
Despite the challenges, both ÖBB and Westbahn have been praised for their customer service during this period, offering refunds and maintaining a focus on climate goals.
