A 35-year-old German man lost consciousness while participating in an apnea diving competition at Lake Achensee in Tyrol on Saturday.
The diver was attempting to descend 60 meters without equipment when he became unresponsive at a depth of 20 meters.
A safety diver quickly rescued him and brought him to the surface.
By the time emergency services arrived, the man had regained consciousness and was able to communicate.
He was subsequently airlifted to Innsbruck Clinic for further evaluation.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, which highlights the risks associated with deep free diving.
