The Steiermark regional government has decided to abolish the "Luft-Hunderter," a 100 km/h speed limit on highways aimed at reducing air pollution.
FPÖ-Landeshauptmann Mario Kunasek announced that the decision was based on data showing compliance with current air quality standards, though stricter EU limits in 2030 would require new measures regardless.
The FPÖ-ÖVP coalition views this as a relief for drivers, but opposition parties, including the Greens and KPÖ, have criticized the move as a setback for environmental and public health.
Critics argue that the decision prioritizes convenience over long-term health and environmental concerns.
Despite the removal, air quality will continue to be monitored, and compensatory measures may be introduced if needed.
