A challenging firefighting operation is underway in the Salzkammergut region as the Buchberg hut, located at 1015 meters above sea level, has been engulfed in flames since early morning.
The remote location of the hut, a popular stop for thousands of hikers annually on their way to the Schafberg, has made access difficult for the fire department.
Volunteer fire brigades from Sankt Gilgen, Sankt Lorenz, Unterach am Attersee, and Steinbach am Attersee are collaborating with Salzburg's team to combat the blaze.
Helicopters are transporting water from Lake Attersee to aid in extinguishing the fire, which is visible from miles away.
The incident is particularly unfortunate as preparations were underway to secure the hut for winter after the tourist season.
Further updates are awaited as the situation develops.
