Kickl's Controversial Stance on Death Penalty

Published: 2024-08-30

In a recent political controversy, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl has sparked debate by suggesting that Austria could potentially reintroduce the death penalty through a public initiative, despite his personal opposition to it.

This proposal, however, would require Austria to exit the European Union, as the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights prohibits the death penalty.

Additionally, Kickl has accused President Alexander Van der Bellen of potentially violating the constitution if he refuses to appoint him as Chancellor, should the FPÖ win the most votes in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Constitutional expert Walter Obwexer clarifies that the Austrian constitution does not mandate the President to appoint the leader of the largest party, but rather someone who can form a government with parliamentary support.

Meanwhile, Kickl has also expressed opposition to phasing out Russian gas imports by 2027, citing their importance to Austria's prosperity.
