Herbert Kickl, leader of Austria's Freedom Party (FPÖ), sparked nationwide controversy with his recent remarks at a campaign event in Hallein.
Addressing a crowd of 300 supporters, Kickl criticized the Salzburg Festival attendees, referring to them as "hypocrites" and an "inbred party.
" His comments drew widespread condemnation, including from Salzburg's Governor Wilfried Haslauer, who emphasized the cultural significance of the festival.
Kickl's deputy, Marlene Svazek, attempted to downplay the remarks, suggesting they targeted the federal government rather than the festival itself.
The backlash extended beyond Salzburg, with SPÖ leader Andreas Babler criticizing Kickl's nostalgic references to former Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, accusing the FPÖ of undermining Kreisky's legacy.
Despite the uproar, Kickl remains steadfast in his rhetoric, positioning himself as a populist figure against Austria's political establishment.
