Germany is set to abolish its controversial gas storage levy, a move that will save Austria up to €750,000 daily.
The levy, introduced during the 2022 energy crisis, added €2.50 per megawatt-hour to gas transported through Germany, impacting neighboring countries like Austria and the Czech Republic.
Austria, which is transitioning away from Russian gas, had criticized the levy for making alternative gas sources more expensive.
Austrian Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler welcomed the decision, calling it a step towards energy independence.
The German Bundestag is expected to finalize the decision this Friday, with broad support from major political parties.
This development also aims to ease tensions with EU neighbors and stabilize the European gas market.
