Austria Prepares for Russian Gas Halt

Published: 2024-11-15

Austria is set to face a significant shift in its energy supply as Russia halts gas deliveries starting Saturday.

This marks the end of a long-standing energy partnership dating back to 1968. Despite the abrupt cessation, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer assured citizens that the country is well-prepared, with gas reserves filled to 93% capacity, enough to meet the annual demand.

The halt follows a legal dispute where OMV, Austria's energy company, won damages against Gazprom.

Nehammer emphasized that no household will face a cold winter, as alternative gas sources are secured.

The move is seen as a strategic step to reduce dependency on Russian energy, with plans to import gas from North Africa and Norway.
