Austria has unveiled its final National Energy and Climate Plan (NEKP), aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 48% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
The plan, presented by Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler, focuses on eliminating climate-damaging subsidies, such as the diesel tax advantage, despite opposition from the ÖVP's agricultural wing.
The NEKP, which lacks specific sector targets due to political compromise, includes measures like promoting hydrogen production and carbon capture storage.
While the plan has been delayed, Austria avoids EU penalties by submitting it now.
Critics argue the plan lacks binding commitments, but Gewessler insists it sets a solid framework for future governments to follow.
The plan's success hinges on its implementation, with environmental groups urging swift action to meet EU climate goals.
