Vienna's Bold Climate Law Unveiled

Published: 2025-02-11

Vienna has introduced Austria's first regional climate law, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040. The law mandates updates to the city's climate roadmap every five years, climate checks for major projects, and partnerships with private entities.

While city officials hail it as a milestone, critics argue it lacks enforceable measures and omits key sectors like transportation.

Mayor Michael Ludwig emphasized the urgency of climate action, citing a 12% drop in emissions in 2023. However, opposition parties label the law as symbolic and insufficient.

The legislation is set to be enacted before Vienna's upcoming elections, positioning the city as a leader in climate policy.
