Energy prices for electricity and gas are set to rise significantly in 2025, driven by higher fees and the end of government subsidies.
Wholesale electricity prices in January 2025 are up 14.2% from the previous month and 26.9% higher than January 2024. Gas prices show a similar trend, with a 2.7% monthly increase and a 26.4% rise year-on-year.
Households will face additional costs of up to €980 annually, according to price comparison platform durchblicker.
The expiration of the electricity price cap alone could add up to €435, while higher network fees and taxes will further strain budgets.
Gas-heated homes will see annual increases of €156 to €251, depending on location.
The reinstatement of full natural gas taxes and a rise in CO₂ pricing will also contribute to the financial burden.
Experts warn that these changes will significantly impact household budgets across Austria.
