FPÖ Politicians in Hot Water Over Funeral Song

Published: 2024-09-28

A political storm has erupted in Austria just before the national elections, following the attendance of prominent Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) politicians at a controversial funeral.

The funeral, held in Vienna, featured the singing of a song historically associated with the SS, sparking outrage among other political parties.

Video footage shows FPÖ candidates Harald Stefan, Norbert Nemeth, and Martin Graf at the event, though it is unclear if they participated in the singing.

The incident has led to severe criticism from the Green Party, SPÖ, and Neos, who accuse the FPÖ of harboring extremist elements.

The ÖVP, while distancing itself from FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl, has not fully condemned the party.

The Jewish Student Union has filed a legal complaint against the FPÖ politicians for suspected Nazi glorification.

The FPÖ has dismissed the criticism, calling it a political misuse of a private funeral.
