Doctor Investigated for Fatal Overdose

An 88-year-old cancer patient at Vienna's General Hospital (AKH) died after allegedly receiving a fatal overdose of the opioid Vendal.

The patient, who showed no signs of pain and had improved oxygen levels, was administered the drug twice, despite warnings from nursing staff and a direct order from the doctor’s superior to avoid its use.

Vendal, particularly risky for elderly patients with kidney issues, was reportedly given in a dose over six times the recommended amount.

The responsible senior doctor allegedly ignored concerns, personally administering the drug.

The patient passed away hours later.

The doctor has been removed from patient care, and authorities are investigating the case as gross negligence manslaughter.
