Youth Arsonists Ignite Historic Site Again

Published: 2024-08-10

A significant fire broke out early Saturday morning at the historic Hammerbrotwerke site in Schwechat, Lower Austria, marking the second such incident in recent months.

The blaze, which was visible from the nearby Vienna-Schwechat Airport, was brought under control by a coordinated effort involving seven fire brigades, including the professional fire brigade from Vienna.

Police investigations quickly identified three youths as the culprits, with two being under the age of 14. The suspects confessed to starting the fire during initial questioning.

This incident follows a similar arson attack at the same location in April, which also involved a large-scale firefighting operation.

The Hammerbrotwerke, a site with a rich history dating back to 1908, has been a repeated target for arson, raising concerns about the preservation of this historic landmark.
