Vienna Invests in Language Education

Published: 2024-12-19

Vienna's Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr has allocated the second round of the "Mutmillion" to eight projects aimed at improving German language skills among schoolchildren.

Nearly 45% of first graders in Vienna lack sufficient German proficiency to follow lessons, highlighting a pressing issue.

Originally intended for post-Covid mental health support, the funds have been redirected to tackle this language gap.

Selected projects include workshops, courses, and specialized learning support, with funding ranging from €80,000 to €200,000. One initiative, "Favoriten: Du kannst das," provides vocabulary-building assistance, while another, "Sag, was du denkst! Sag, was du fühlst!," encourages students to express emotions, enhancing both language and social skills.

Wiederkehr emphasizes the need for broader educational reforms at the federal level to address systemic challenges.
