Vienna's Welfare Policies Under Fire

Published: 2024-09-26

In Vienna, a political storm is brewing over the city's social welfare policies, particularly the Mindestsicherung, or minimum income support.

The ÖVP and FPÖ parties have jointly filed a motion of no confidence against Health Councillor Peter Hacker, criticizing his handling of social benefits.

This move follows public outcry over a Syrian family receiving €4,600 monthly, which both parties argue exemplifies excessive social spending.

They claim that Vienna's policies make it a 'social magnet,' attracting more people due to generous benefits.

The ÖVP demands a tiered system for child benefits, similar to other regions, while the FPÖ highlights inadequate control over welfare distribution.

Despite these criticisms, Hacker remains unfazed, defending the city's commitment to fighting child poverty.

The motion is set to be discussed in the city council, coinciding with the national elections, adding a layer of political tension to the debate.
