Protests Erupt in Vienna Against FPÖ

Published: 2024-09-30

In Vienna, a demonstration erupted outside the Parliament on election night as protestors voiced their discontent with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) gaining strength.

Organized by leftist groups and small parties, the protest moved from Yppenplatz to the city center, chanting slogans like "All of Vienna hates the FPÖ" and "Never Kickl.

" The demonstrators warned against the FPÖ's potential role in government, emphasizing the importance of human and women's rights.

Meanwhile, the FPÖ achieved a historic first-place finish in the national elections, securing around 29% of the vote, surpassing the ÖVP's 26%.

The SPÖ faced its worst result with 20.5%, while the Greens and Neos were nearly tied.

In a related incident, the far-right group "Defend Austria," known for its neo-Nazi-like appearance, attempted to disrupt a rally in Linz, showcasing their support for the FPÖ.
