Naschmarkt's Green Transformation Begins

Published: 2024-10-03

The transformation of Vienna's Naschmarkt parking area into a green space, known as "Naschpark," has officially begun, with completion expected by 2027. The project aims to replace the asphalt with greenery, including 90 new trees, shrubs, and grass beds, to combat the urban heat island effect.

Despite initial resistance, adjustments were made through public consultations, leading to a more accepted plan.

However, the inclusion of a covered market area, or "Marktraum," has sparked protests from local residents who feel it was not part of the participatory process.

The project, costing an estimated 27 million euros, will be executed in phases, with the park and market area set to open by autumn 2025. The initiative seeks to enhance local quality of life by providing a cooler, more inviting environment.
