Farewell to Vienna's Charismatic Builder

Published: 2024-08-30

The Austrian construction magnate Richard Lugner, known for his charismatic personality and love for the Vienna Opera Ball, has passed away at the age of 91. His funeral, set to take place in Vienna, will be a grand affair, reflecting his larger-than-life persona.

The public can pay their respects at a memorial service in the iconic Stephansdom, where notable figures like Norbert Hofer and Edith Leyrer will deliver eulogies.

Lugner's passion for the Opera Ball will be honored with his legendary top hat placed on his casket.

Despite some controversy, such as the Vienna State Opera's decision not to fly a black flag, the event is expected to draw a significant crowd, including many of Lugner's former companions, affectionately nicknamed by him.

The private burial will follow at the Grinzinger Cemetery, attended by close family and friends, respecting Lugner's wishes for a personal farewell.
