Karoline Edtstadler, Austria's current Minister for Europe and the Constitution, has announced her decision to step back from top-tier politics.
She plans to establish a law firm in her hometown of Salzburg while retaining her position as a member of the National Council.
Edtstadler, a prominent figure in the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), has been involved in significant political roles since being appointed by Sebastian Kurz in 2017. Her decision comes amid speculations of internal party tensions and her exclusion from the nomination for an EU Commissioner role, which instead went to Finance Minister Magnus Brunner.
Despite stepping down from ministerial duties, Edtstadler will continue to support coalition negotiations for the ÖVP.
Her move marks a significant shift in the party's dynamics, as she was previously considered a potential successor to Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
