Austria has officially nominated Finance Minister Magnus Brunner as its new EU Commissioner, following extensive negotiations between the ruling coalition of the ÖVP and the Greens.
This decision comes after a prolonged period of uncertainty and internal disputes over the nomination process, which had been complicated by differing party interests.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized that Brunner's appointment reflects Austria's commitment to a strong European presence, while Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler acknowledged Brunner's extensive experience and connections in Europe.
Despite Ursula von der Leyen's request for a dual nomination of a man and a woman, Austria has opted for a single candidate.
The nomination is seen as crucial for Austria's influence in the EU, especially as the country prepares for upcoming elections.
