Austria's government has officially nominated Finance Minister Magnus Brunner as the new EU Commissioner, following a lengthy negotiation process between the ÖVP and the Greens.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized that Brunner's appointment reflects Austria's commitment to Europe and its interests.
Despite the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's request for a male and female candidate, Austria has only put forward Brunner's name.
The Greens, who initially resisted the nomination, have reportedly agreed in exchange for concessions on energy policies.
However, opposition parties have criticized the decision, arguing that it undermines democratic principles and overlooks the need for gender balance in such appointments.
Brunner, known for his expertise in finance and energy, will now face the challenge of securing a significant portfolio in the new EU Commission.
