Vienna's Christmas Tree Tradition Shines Bright

Published: 2024-10-29

The iconic Christmas tree for Vienna's Christkindlmarkt has arrived, marking a cherished tradition that unites the city with its neighboring region, Lower Austria.

This year's tree, a majestic 34-meter tall spruce, hails from Rastenfeld in the Waldviertel area.

Originally growing in a private garden, the tree was carefully selected and transported to Vienna, where it was trimmed to 28 meters for display.

The spruce, weighing seven tons and approximately 80 years old, was delivered in the early hours to avoid disrupting city traffic.

For the first time, the tree will be adorned with 1,000 festive Christmas baubles in addition to its usual lights, enhancing its splendor for the market's opening on November 15. The official illumination ceremony is set for November 16, promising to light up the Christkindlmarkt and delight visitors.
