In Niederösterreich, Austria, a controversial plan to close several hospitals has been unveiled, sparking significant political and public debate.
An expert report suggests shutting down four of the 27 hospital sites to save resources and alleviate staff shortages.
The hospitals in Hollabrunn, Korneuburg, and Stockerau are proposed to be consolidated into a new facility, while Gänserndorf would become a primary care center.
The plan, however, is not yet finalized and is described as a 'working document' by the Landesgesundheitsagentur.
Criticism has emerged from the SPÖ, labeling the closures as an attack on patient care.
The recommendations are set to be discussed further before being presented to the regional government in early 2025.
