Neos Exit Shakes Austrian Politics

Published: 2025-01-03

The Neos party has withdrawn from coalition talks with the ÖVP and SPÖ, citing a lack of progress on key reforms.

Party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger announced the decision, emphasizing that the Neos would not support a government unwilling to tackle long-term issues like pension reform.

While the Neos remain open to parliamentary collaboration on specific reforms, they refuse to compromise their principles for political positions.

The SPÖ criticized the move, accusing the Neos of shirking responsibility, while the ÖVP blamed internal SPÖ divisions for the breakdown.

The collapse of the talks leaves Austria without a new government 96 days after the election, raising concerns about political stability and the potential for new elections.
