In a significant development, the Wels Public Prosecutor's Office has charged a 61-year-old German man with dangerous threats against Austrian doctor Lisa-Maria Kellermayr.
The doctor, who was a vocal advocate for COVID-19 safety measures, tragically took her own life in July 2022 after receiving threatening messages.
The accused allegedly sent four emails and three Twitter messages between February and July 2022, threatening to bring her before a 'people's tribunal' and imprison her.
These messages are believed to have contributed to her suicide, as indicated by her farewell letters and a forensic psychiatric report.
The accused, who has a history of similar offenses in Germany, admits to sending the messages but denies any intent to cause harm.
If convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison.
