In a landmark move, Austria has auctioned its first car confiscated from a speeding offender.
This follows a new regulation introduced in March 2024, allowing authorities to not only seize but also auction vehicles involved in severe speeding violations.
The auctioned vehicle, a Peugeot 208, was sold online through Dorotheum in Vorarlberg, fetching 6,800 euros.
Since the regulation's implementation, 133 vehicles have been seized, with 13 permanently confiscated.
The proceeds from such auctions are split, with 70% going to the Austrian Road Safety Fund and 30% to the local authority involved in the legal proceedings.
This initiative is part of Austria's broader efforts to curb dangerous driving and enhance road safety.
