Austria has finalized the purchase of 12 Leonardo M-346FA jets to replace the retired Saab 105 fleet.
This decision, delayed since 2023, marks a significant step in strengthening the country's air defense and pilot training capabilities.
The new jets will allow Austria to bring pilot training back home, reducing reliance on costly foreign programs.
Budgeted at around one billion euros, the jets will also support ground forces and enhance airspace security.
The deal, a collaboration with Italy, highlights strong ties between the two nations.
The jets will operate from Linz-Hörsching, restoring the base's military importance and easing pressure on Zeltweg's Eurofighters.
