Austria Raises Marriage Age to 18

Published: 2024-08-19

In a significant policy shift, Austria has decided to raise the legal marriage age to 18, eliminating previous exceptions that allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to marry with parental consent.

This move aims to combat forced marriages, a concern highlighted by both the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Greens.

The new legislation also bans marriages between close relatives, such as cousins, aligning with international human rights standards.

Justice Minister Alma Zadic emphasized that the change protects young individuals from being pressured into marriage.

The decision comes after prolonged debates between the coalition partners, with the ÖVP pushing for immediate action and the Greens advocating for a broader legislative package.

This agreement marks a crucial step towards safeguarding minors in Austria.
