Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost state, held its municipal elections today, with 96 communities voting for new councils and, in 61 cases, directly electing mayors.
The elections are particularly competitive in major cities like Dornbirn, Lustenau, and Bregenz, where outgoing ÖVP mayors leave uncertain outcomes.
In Dornbirn and Lustenau, the ÖVP faces strong challenges from the FPÖ, while in Bregenz, SPÖ's Michael Ritsch seeks to defend his position against ÖVP's Roland Frühstück.
Smaller municipalities often see less competition, with some even using blank ballots to nominate candidates.
The FPÖ is expected to gain ground, capitalizing on security concerns, while the ÖVP risks further losses after setbacks in 2020. Results are expected swiftly, with polls closing at 1 PM.
