Vienna's Youth Crime Crisis

Published: 2024-07-25

In Vienna, rising youth crime has sparked urgent calls for action from local officials.

Christoph Wiederkehr, the city's youth councilor from the NEOS party, expressed concern over the increasing violence among youth gangs, particularly involving minors under 14. He proposed a five-point plan to combat this issue, which includes mandatory programs for young offenders and the reintroduction of a youth court.

Recent statistics reveal alarming figures: over 4,200 charges and nearly 400 arrests related to youth crime in just four months, with a significant number of offenders being underage.

Wiederkehr also emphasized the need for swift deportation of criminal asylum seekers, urging the federal government to take responsibility for public safety.

The situation highlights a troubling trend of escalating violence and the challenges of addressing juvenile delinquency in the city.
