Vienna has taken a bold step in its fight against housing speculators by placing its first property under municipal control.
The house at Salzachstraße 46, neglected by its owner, will now undergo essential repairs funded directly from tenant rents.
This move follows the city’s November announcement of stricter measures against landlords who exploit tenants or neglect maintenance.
The initiative aims to disrupt the profit-driven practices of speculators, with 12 properties currently under scrutiny.
Early successes have already prompted some landlords to address issues proactively.
Additionally, Vienna is introducing more accessible loans for affordable housing, easing financial barriers for tenants starting in January.
These combined efforts signal a strong stance against exploitative housing practices.
