A tragic accident occurred on Thursday in Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser, where a 78-year-old German alpinist fell to his death while hiking with his 17-year-old grandson.

The pair had set off early in the morning, reaching the summit of Treffauer at around 11:30 AM.

After a brief rest, they decided to descend via the south-west side of the mountain.

During the descent, the grandfather slipped on a steep, rocky slope and fell approximately 50 meters, landing in a gully.

Despite the rapid response from emergency services, including a rescue helicopter and mountain rescue teams, the doctor could only confirm his death.

The grandson was provided support by a crisis intervention team following the traumatic incident.
