In the Austrian state of Styria, political dynamics are shifting as the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) enter coalition negotiations.
Following the recent state elections, the FPÖ emerged as the leading party with approximately 35% of the vote, while the ÖVP, led by Christopher Drexler, experienced its worst electoral performance, securing just under 27%.
Despite this setback, the ÖVP is negotiating to remain in the government, albeit as a junior partner to the FPÖ.
This potential coalition marks a significant political shift, as it would be the fifth state government in Austria with FPÖ participation, but the only one with an FPÖ governor.
The Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), traditionally a part of the state government, faces the prospect of moving into opposition.
Meanwhile, internal pressures mount within the ÖVP, with calls for leadership changes as Drexler's position is questioned.
The outcome of these negotiations could reshape the political landscape in Styria, with significant implications for both local and national politics.
