Nehammer and Meinl-Reisinger Eye Reform Coalition

Published: 2024-09-11

In a recent TV debate, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and NEOS leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger expressed a shared interest in forming a "real reform coalition.

" Despite some differences, both leaders found common ground on issues like unemployment benefits and border protection against illegal migration.

Meinl-Reisinger emphasized the need for her party's drive to energize the government, criticizing the ÖVP's lack of change after 37 years in power.

Nehammer defended his party's achievements, citing reforms like the abolition of cold progression and eco-social tax reforms.

Both leaders ruled out a coalition with FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl, though Nehammer did not entirely dismiss working with the FPÖ.

The debate highlighted potential collaboration between the ÖVP and NEOS, with both parties showing willingness to address key national issues together.
