Linz Mayor Resigns Amid Scandal

Published: 2024-08-23

Klaus Luger, the mayor of Linz, has resigned following a scandal involving the unauthorized sharing of confidential documents.

The controversy erupted when it was revealed that Luger had provided hearing documents to Dietmar Kerschbaum, a candidate for the Brucknerhaus director position, and subsequently lied about it.

This led to significant political pressure and a loss of support within his party, the SPÖ.

Despite initially resisting calls to step down, Luger announced his resignation, effective September 2, citing personal regret over his actions.

The SPÖ has nominated Dietmar Prammer as his successor, with new elections expected soon.

The scandal has also posed challenges for SPÖ leader Andreas Babler, who had to navigate internal party dynamics to address the issue.
