FPÖ Triumphs in Historic Styrian Election

Published: 2024-11-24

In a historic shift, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has emerged victorious in the 2024 Styrian state elections, securing 34.8% of the vote.

This marks the first time the FPÖ has topped a state election outside of Carinthia.

The party's leader, Mario Kunasek, celebrated the win as a significant achievement, positioning him as a potential first blue governor of Styria.

Meanwhile, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) suffered losses, with the ÖVP dropping to 26.8% and the SPÖ stagnating at 21.4%.

The election results indicate a shift in voter sentiment, particularly among Generation X and older Millennials, who showed a preference for the FPÖ.

The previous black-red coalition no longer holds a majority, signaling potential changes in the political landscape of Styria.
