Fatal Tunnel Crash in Tirol

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Lermooser Tunnel on the Fernpassstraße (B179) in Tirol, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

A 62-year-old Austrian driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, veered onto the opposite lane and crashed into the tunnel wall, leading to a collision with an oncoming vehicle driven by a 56-year-old German.

The Austrian driver died at the scene, while the German driver and his 53-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized.

Another German woman, aged 55, was treated for injuries and later released for home care.

The accident involved three vehicles and required extensive emergency response, including rescue helicopters and over 100 personnel.

The tunnel was closed for several hours, causing significant traffic delays.
