A tragic incident occurred in Steinfeld, Kärnten, on Sunday night when a 35-year-old man was struck and killed by a train while attempting to cross the tracks.
Witnesses reported that the man, who was heavily intoxicated after a local festival, chose to take a shortcut home to Greifenburg by walking on the railway tracks around 9:35 PM.
The train, a Railjet traveling from Villach to Lienz, was unable to stop in time despite the conductor's emergency brake.
The train hit the man at approximately 100 km/h, throwing him into a nearby embankment.
Emergency services, including police and firefighters, searched for the man and found him about an hour later, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy later confirmed that he died from multiple traumatic injuries.
