Austria's Gender Pay Gap: A Persistent Issue

Published: 2024-10-30

In Austria, the gender pay gap remains a significant issue, with women earning on average 18.4% less than men.

This disparity is even more pronounced for women with a migration background, who earn 25% less than their male counterparts.

The Momentum Institute highlights that many women work in undervalued, female-dominated sectors such as childcare and cleaning, which are crucial yet poorly paid.

The Austrian Chamber of Labour (AK) is pushing for the swift implementation of the EU's pay transparency directive, which mandates income reports from companies with over 100 employees.

The AK advocates for this requirement to apply to companies with as few as 25 employees to ensure broader coverage.

This move aims to address wage discrimination and promote fair pay, which is seen as essential for improving workplace satisfaction and productivity.
