Austria's Asylum Seeker Card Plan

Published: 2024-08-20

Austria is set to introduce a nationwide digital payment card system for asylum seekers by 2025, aiming to streamline the provision of basic needs and curb misuse of funds.

The initiative, led by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, follows a successful pilot in Upper Austria, where asylum seekers received a card instead of cash for essentials.

The card restricts online shopping and international transfers, addressing concerns about funds being sent to smugglers or abroad.

While the federal government supports the rollout, individual states can choose whether to adopt the system.

Some states, like Lower Austria, have developed their own models, leading to a fragmented approach across the country.

The digital card is seen as a way to simplify administration and enhance security in asylum accommodations.
