Austrian Coalition Talks Hit Deadlock

Published: 2024-10-21

Austria's political landscape remains in a deadlock as coalition talks continue without resolution.

SPÖ leader Andreas Babler and ÖVP head Karl Nehammer have both categorically ruled out forming a coalition with the FPÖ, led by Herbert Kickl, citing concerns over his party's radical positions.

Despite meetings facilitated by President Alexander Van der Bellen, no progress has been made towards a viable government coalition.

The SPÖ and ÖVP, lacking a majority, are considering the NEOS as a potential third partner.

However, the political impasse persists, with no immediate solution in sight.
