Austria is ramping up measures to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) after outbreaks in neighboring Hungary and Slovakia.
The highly contagious virus affects cloven-hoofed animals like cattle, pigs, and goats but poses no risk to humans.
Authorities have implemented import bans on animals and animal products from affected regions and intensified border checks.
In Vienna, the Schönbrunn Zoo has closed its petting zoo and restricted access to certain areas as a precaution.
Meanwhile, the Cobenzl petting zoo has also been partially closed, though schools and kindergartens are still allowed entry.
Experts emphasize the importance of strict hygiene to prevent the virus from spreading, as it can be carried on clothing and objects.
While no cases have been reported in Austria, officials are urging vigilance to protect the country’s livestock industry.
